Singles, Exercise and Diet

singles and diet

Pot luck dinner anyone? Churches seem to love those fat laden affairs, and Christian singles are apparently leading the way to the buffet. A recent UK survey on the habits of singles found that singles of all ages had unhealthier diets than married folks. For example:

  • More than two times as many single people ate fried food and fast food (3x a week) compared to those married. That’s a lot of Burger King!
  • Only 20% of single men and women ate the recommended 5 daily servings of fruits and veggies, compared to 34% for married couples.

The only good news for singles is that they were more likely to excercise than their married counterparts. I suppose we have to work off all that artery clogging junk food!

I found the above news on diet quite surprising. After all, obesity is usually counter-productive to finding a girlfriend or boyfriend. Yet, there are many reasons why singles may have poorer diets than married people. Some singles report that they would rather not cook if they are doing it for themselves. Others report that eating comfort foods (like French Fries) helps them deal with stress and loneliness. Finally, still other singles stated they’re on the run so often, they simply have no time to prepare a healthy meal.

In God’s Word, it’s clear that God wants His children to honor Him with their bodies. Would you agree that this not only means to stay away from sexual impurity, but also from stuffing our faces with unhealthy foods? Ouch.

Bible Verse of Day

-Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body- 1 Cor. 6:19-20

Love Friendship Quotes

Is it love or friendship? Love and friendship quotes often express that hazy area between platonic love of close freindships and romantic love. Embodied in these love, friendship quotes is passion and confusion all rolled into one.

So just when does a close friendship between Christian singles turn into that other kind of love? How would you tell the difference? Do you have a friendship that’s transformed into true romantic love? Breaking across that boundary between love and friendship can be a wonderful but risky experience. Wonderful because the best of friends can make the best of lovers. Risky because there is always the possibility of unrequited love and the loss of a special friendship.

Favorite Love Friendship Quote

One of my top love freindship quotes comes from an 80’s Roberta Flack song called Tonight I Celebrate My Love for You. It’s a romantic love song about friends becoming life long lovers. It’s meant to be a great marriage song:

-Tonight I celebrate my love for you
And soon this old world will seem brand new
Tonight we will both discover
How friends turn into lovers-

Unrequited Love

In my personal experience, unrequited love is like death, only worse. Unrequited love occurs when the person you absolutely are “head over heels” in love with does not reciprocate the same desire and feelings. Can you think of anything more emotionally and spiritually painful than unrequited love?

Unrequited Love and Hope for Healing

At least in death a Christian single is done with pain. In unrequited love the pain just goes on and on. Sigh. If it’s really true love, the victim of unrequited love has a long process of working through the rejection, heartbreak and depression. Many singles who have been hurt in this way in the past also have to overcome fears of entering any future dating relationship.

One of the main things that helped me heal from unrequited love was remembering my Saviour also suffered from a form of unrequited love when he gave Himself on the cross. That’s why he can sympathize and empathize with us in this area. Can you imagine the pain the bore for us?

Bible Verse of Day

-He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him- John 1:11
