Christian Marriage Vows and Submission1

christian marriage vows

Discussing Christian marriage vows can be one of the hardest parts of planning a wedding ceremony. A lot of Christian single engaged couples stumble over Christian marriage vows because of one simple word: submission.

Christian Marriage Vow Controversy

Many traditional Christian marriage vows, in an attempt to express what was thought to be the Bible’s teaching on wives submitting to their husbands, include one little phrase where the bride pledges to “love honor and obey” her mate.

Today, most Christian marriage vows of brides delete the “obey” part, and have replaced it with “cherish”. Some couples have actually had arguments over this issue, to the point of delaying the wedding ceremony.

However, much of the Christian marriage vow controversy we see could be ended if only believers took another long look at what the Bible actually teaches about submission.

Daily Devotional

In our Bible Devotion for today, Pastor Dave Gremban, of Calvary Chapel Ann Arbor, Michigan, expounds on the idea of submssion:

“In Ephesians 5:21-33, we learn about mutual submission (v. 21) in the context of the marriage relationship. In short, a husband is called to submit to his wife by loving her; and a wife is called to submit to her husband by respecting him (v. 33).

“A husband who loves his wife, giving of himself as Christ gave Himself, reflects Christ and His love for the Church (v. 25). A wife who respects her husband
and submits to his leadership reflects the Church and her respect for Christ (v. 23-24).

“Let’s cultivate marriages that communicate this beautiful picture of Christ and the Church! May God’s Spirit enable us to each do our part.”

Bible Verse of Day

-Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.-Ephesians 5:21

Looking to Find a Christian Wife(share a tip?)

Ever wonder how many single guys out there are actually looking to find a Christian wife? I would think many Christian single women in the market for a husband would be interested in knowing the number of Christian men hoping to find a Christian wife. Well we are too, and that’s one reason why our up and coming singles survey will try to quantify the different number of Christian single men looking to find a Christian wife, those looking to simply find a date and those not seeking a mate or date at all.

Lack of Biblical Guidance on How to Find a Christian Wife

Unfortunately, there is no specific dating advice in the Bible on how to find a wife, and you certainly won’t find dogmatic teaching on this subject. For example, in 1 Corinthians 7:27 Paul writes, “Are you unmarried? Do not look for look to find a wife. But if you do marry, you have not sinned…”

Although there is no “how to find a wife” playbook in the Scriptures, you will find general advice on topics such as waiting on the Lord, that would be applicable in your search to find a Christian wife.

Bible Verse of Day

“He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.”
Proverbs 18:22

Dear Father, we pray for my dear brothers in Christ who are seeking a suitable helpmate. We pray for their peace and strength as they wait on you. I thank you that you promise to provide all of our needs in your perfect time. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Unequally Yoked: Not Just For Marriage(tell us your view)

Most seasoned Christians are familiar with 2 Corinthians 6:14, concerning being unequally yoked. Most Christians may also agree that a believer should not marry a non-believer.

However, the problem is that being unequally yoked goes beyond just marriage. Any partnership that “yokes” a believer with a non-believer should be avoided. One example of this issue is when a Christian and a non-Christian embark in a business together. Christian values and moneymaking are at odds many times.

Dating is a partnership too. If a believer knows for sure that the potential “date” is a non-believer, the issue of dating should be a “no brainer” for the Christian. He is unequally yoked. The believer shouldn’t rationalize the decision to date as an opportunity to witness and “create” a Christian spouse. The Believer can witness and evangelize without dating, and the witness will be more powerful.

Is it a sin for a believer to date a non-believer? I don’t know, but I do know it is unwise. The Bible is filled with individuals who decided not to follow the Lord’s Wisdom and found misery.

Bible Verse of the Day

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
2 Cor 6:14
