Dating a Friend-Should Friends Date?(share a tip?)

dating a friend

Thinking about dating a friend? A Christian single guy wrote us asking if it’s a good idea if best friends date one another. So what do you think? Should friends date each other? I know the cynical among us may agree with that line from When Harry Met Sally, “that a man and a woman can’t really be just friends.” But that’s the topic of another article. Let’s get back to the issue of whether or not friends should date.

Dating a Friend-No Easy Answers

One of the driving forces behind friendship dating is the saying that “the best of friends make the best of lovers.” Yes, there are no easy answers here. But if you are planning to take the plunge and date a friend, you should at least be cognizant of the following:

  • Dating a friend changes the complexion of that friendship forever. If it doesn’t work out, there will be awkwardness even if you attempt to remain friends. If things do work out, your platonic friendship (which does have unique benefits) has moved to a different level. Sooo…., you need to contemplate whether you’re willing to risk that great present friendship for uncharted waters that may lead to disaster.
  • Remember, while you may actually love that girl or guy, there is always the possibility of unrequited love. :( When your friend has different expectations than you do, dating that friend is probably a bad idea from the get go.

Overall, please don’t get the idea that we are dissing dating a friend. We are not. Dating a friend, if things go well, can be one of the most exciting and thrilling things happen in a relationship. While some friends who date are ideal soul mates for each other, most of these relationships do not last. Just be willing to count the cost.

Christian Single Dating for Single Christians(share)

Our vision for this Christian single dating site has never been to be simply a Christian dating service. Rather, our goal has always been to be a Christian singles “resource hub” where one can find Christian single dating reviews, spiritual encouragement, dating advice, singles groups and interaction with other singles by the writing and sharing of articles.

Christian Single Dating Tips

Many have written asking us what Christian single dating advice we could give in order to help singles enjoy a better online Christian dating experience. We thought long and hard on this, and came up with one simple thought: Avoid Extremes. Here’s what we mean by that:

On the one hand, there are many singles who yearn for a Christian single dating partner, but are overly cautious. So much so that they allow their fears to rule over their desire for a Christian single dating relationship. The end result is that these poor singles remain depressed, discouraged and quite possibly out of God’s will.

As far as the other Christian single dating extreme is concerned, there are those Christians who get tired of waiting on God, and plunge heart first into a Christian single dating relationship that they should have avoided altogether. The result is often a bunch of pain, rejection and heartache. These Christian dating singles have not taken to heart our Bible Verse of the day:

-Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life.-Proverbs 4:23

Successful Christian single dating means having a prayerful balance between the two dating attitudes we find among Christian singles.

Matchmaker Dating, Faith and Christian Singles(share?)

Certain online dating services are what we call matchmaker dating sites. Matchmaker dating is different from other types of online dating service (like Christian Mingle, for example) in that the person using them has less control over the dating process.

Instead of you choosing your own potential dating match, the dating matchmaker service will choose a partner for you, usually after you complete an indepth compatibility test unique to the particular service. We referred to this type of dating matchmaker service in a previous article on eharmony.com, which offers the kind of matchmaker site we are talking about.

Dating Matchmaker in the Bible

The first dating matchmaker was not a modern matchmaker service, but rather Abraham’s chief servant, whose name we never find out about in the Scripture.

The story in Genesis 24 goes like this: Abraham gave his chief servant, the very first dating matchmaker, the job of finding a wife for Isaac. The wonderful thing from this whole passage is that Abraham had faith in God that He would supernaturally provide a wife for his son.

Bible Verse of Day

Abraham said, “the LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household…He will send His angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.” Genesis 24:7

Wow! Look at that faith! What about you as a single Christian seeking a mate? Do you believe your God will supernaturally provide a wife or husband for you?

I believe this because I’ve seen God play the dating matchmaker role in so many of my friends’ lives over the years. I also find it comforting that God Himself is interested in this part of our lives. He is, in fact our ultimate Dating Matchmaker.
