Sad Love Songs

May 2, 2007

Jim Croce, a 70s songwriter, wrote some of the most amazing and sad love songs you will ever find. A love song is really a relationship poem that will convey heartfelt feelings about what a person has gone through in a particular relationship. A good love song, if it is sad, will actually make you feel like you are walking in the writers shoes, and experiencing the same sorrow. Sigh.

Favorite Sad Love Song

One of my favorite sad love songs is Jim Croce’s Time in a Bottle. Basically, the song is about not having enough time to spend with the person you love. Ironically, Jim died in a crash shortly after publishing it. He had written it this sad love song about his wife and music career. For this reason, this sad love song is not only beautiful , but eerie in a way. It certainly reminds me of how mortal I am, and that I should not take time for granted. In this sense, this sad love song is deeply effective:

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I’d save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go
Through time with

Bible Verse of Day: James 4:13,14:

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

As a single Christian, do you have a favorite sad love song?

Love Songs in the Bible

December 17, 2006

Everybody loves a good love song now and again. That’s why there are so many online “love song” sites dedicated to accumulating love song lyrics. People just seem to love them!

Now That’s an Old Love Song!

Most of my singles friends who are not Christians are surprised when I tell them that some of the oldest and hottest “love songs” are found in the Bible. I’ll tell you what, King Solomon sure knew how to write a good love song. Take a gander at this:

Bible Verse of Day

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—
for your love is more delightful than wine.

Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes;
your name is like perfume poured out.
No wonder the maidens love you!

Take me away with you—let us hurry!
Let the king bring me into his chambers.
Song of Songs 1:2,3,4

Whoa, don’t you just hear the sizzle? I know some Christians reading this are uncomfortable with this kind of language, and try to exegete these passages in a purely symbolic fashion. Ah, I don’t thinks so.

My love song advice for these gracious folks is to…..get over it! Putting on a prudish front only allows the world to misinterpret what true Christianity is all about.

Instead, we need rejoice in the fact that our God created both love and sex to be enjoyed by His children…as long it is in His way and His timing. For the Christian truly following Jesus, this means waiting until marriage.
