Matchmaker Dating, Faith and Christian Singles(share?)

Certain online dating services are what we call matchmaker dating sites. Matchmaker dating is different from other types of online dating service (like Christian Mingle, for example) in that the person using them has less control over the dating process.

Instead of you choosing your own potential dating match, the dating matchmaker service will choose a partner for you, usually after you complete an indepth compatibility test unique to the particular service. We referred to this type of dating matchmaker service in a previous article on eharmony.com, which offers the kind of matchmaker site we are talking about.

Dating Matchmaker in the Bible

The first dating matchmaker was not a modern matchmaker service, but rather Abraham’s chief servant, whose name we never find out about in the Scripture.

The story in Genesis 24 goes like this: Abraham gave his chief servant, the very first dating matchmaker, the job of finding a wife for Isaac. The wonderful thing from this whole passage is that Abraham had faith in God that He would supernaturally provide a wife for his son.

Bible Verse of Day

Abraham said, “the LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household…He will send His angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.” Genesis 24:7

Wow! Look at that faith! What about you as a single Christian seeking a mate? Do you believe your God will supernaturally provide a wife or husband for you?

I believe this because I’ve seen God play the dating matchmaker role in so many of my friends’ lives over the years. I also find it comforting that God Himself is interested in this part of our lives. He is, in fact our ultimate Dating Matchmaker.

Christian Matchmaker, Make Me a Match, and Soon(share!)

Christian Matchmaker

Friends tell me I’m a virtual Christian matchmaker service. No, I don’t offer the kind of Christian matchmaker services they have on the internet (although we do review them here). What I do is simply introduce Christian singles to one another in nonchalant ways. Here’s an example of what I do: “Susie, this is Johnny. Did I tell you that he lives right in your dorm, and plays the same instrument you do?” The rest usually takes care of itself. Using my own special Christian matchmaker techniques like this, I have helped marry off at least 12 different singles over the years of ministry. Pretty good, huh?

The Real Christian Matchmaker is the Lord Himself

Sometimes when I think of the term, Christian Matchmaker, I kind of chuckle. No matter how good Christian matchmakers like Christian Cafe, eHarmony.com or moi are, it’s the Lord who is the real Christian matchmaker.

Believe it or not, the first human matchmaker is found in the Bible! In Genesis 24, Abraham sent his servant to find a wife (who turned out to be Rebekah) for Isaac. Yet, as you read this story you quickly see that it was the Lord Himself who was the real matchmaker behind the scenes. He led Abraham’s servant to just the right mate for Isaac. What was the reaction of the servant to all of this? In our Bible verse of the day in Genesis 24:26 he exclaims:

“At this the man bowed in worship before God and prayed, “Blessed be God, God of my master Abraham: How generous and true you’ve been to my master; you’ve held nothing back.”

If you are a single Christian guy or girl praying for a husband or a wife, know that it’s fine to use a Christian matchmaker, whether it be with an online matchmaker or a kooky singles minister.

The issue here is whether or not you believe that your GOD is in charge, and that as our verse says, He is generous and true and holds nothing back. Are you willing to trust God as your ultimate Christian Matchmaker?

Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Give Me 2 Million0

Make me a match. Find me a find. Catch me a catch. Anne Majerik just caught a cool two million, so I guess she found her match.  This week a California jury awarded the 60 year old social worker from Erie, PA  2.1 million dollars after she sued a Beverly Hills Matchmaker Service for failing to make her a match with an eligible millionaire.

Orly Hadida, the owner of the matchmaker service, charged Majerik over $125,000  (yes, eHarmony.com doesn’t seem so expensive now!) with the promise  that she would meet millionaire bachelors for dating relationships.  When the promise came up empty (the poor lady only met a humble banker), Majerik sued the dating service for damages.

What’s your take on this matchmaker brouhaha?  For me, this whole case makes me want to vomit.  I don’t know what’s worse, the materialism and greed of this social worker (that’s funny), or the elitist attitude of the Ms. Hadida’s matchmaker service.  Anyway, it’s interesting that many in the jury thought both of these women despicable, and wanted each side to lose by having the judge order the defendant pay out 20 million dollars to a charity, not to Majerik. When the judge told the jury he could not do that, they grudgingly settled on the present figure.

What Are You Looking For in a Match?

So what about you?  If you are one the many Christain singles out there waiting on God for that perfect match, just what are you looking to find? Does he or she have to be filthy rich? Do they have to look like a “10″, or can they be average in appearance?  Do they have to drive an expensive car?

Overall, there is nothing sinful about wishing for that special soulmate, using a matchmaker service or one of the online dating services. However, before doing so we should examine our hearts motives viz-a-viz God’s word. I also will never forget my dad’s words: “What you want may not be what you need, or even what is good for you. But you can never go wrong if you give Jesus first place in your life because all these great things will be added unto you as well.”  Amen.
