Email Etiquette for Dating

email etiquette for dating

As a Christian single who uses email in online dating services, you may have email etiquette questions. Say you’re interested in a particular person’s dating profile, and you want to contact them via email. However, you’re not sure what to say and how to say it. Don’t worry about it! If you follow these dating advice tips on email etiquette you will succeed.

Email Etiquette Tips

Email Etiquette Tip #1: Think Safety First

Familiarize yourself with online safety dating tips before even thinking about sending out an email or Instant Message to another single. Don’t give out your regular e-mail address too soon. If you do, make sure you have configured your internet email program to hide your name, in order to avoid unwanted address tracing. Once someone has your name, it’s easy to track your location.

Fortunately, a number of Christian dating services, like  eHarmony,Christian Cafe and SingleC (also known as Single Christian Network), take care of this potential problem by providing “inhouse” email and messaging systems for members to use.

Email Etiquette Tip #2: Speak the Truth in Love

As single Christians, remember that the foundation for all of our emails and online communications should be speaking the truth in love (Eph. 4:15) with wholesomeness (Eph. 4:29). And remember the goal is to attract a potential soulmate, not repel them. Let’s see, do you think this excludes cybersex?

Email Etiquette Tip #3: Have Something to Say

Whether you are meeting face to face or through email, having good conversation starter skills will help you connect with the other person, while helping you ascertain whether they are a match for you as well. This means you should write your email in the same easygoing way that you would speak to people in person.

Email Etiquette Tip #3: Keep it Real

If you are writing your first email, please, please don’t send a form letter. It’s not only tacky, but gives the impression that you don’t care. Believe me, singles can tell when they’ve been “spormed.” Instead, write a heartfelt email letter expressing what you liked about their dating profile, while adding a little background information on yourself.

Email Etiquette Tip #4: Always Leave Them Wanting More

You’re writing a dating letter not a novel, so keep it brief, warm and to the point. Make your sentences short, having no more than three or four to a paragraph. Also, make sure you double space between paragraphs because it makes your email less boring and easier to read.

Email Etiquette Tip #5: Don’t Leave Them Hanging

When you are on the receiving end of an email, it is proper etiquette to respond within 24 hours of receipt. Even if you do not have the time to respond as you would like, acknowledging the other party’s initial email with a little note, and explaining you will get back shortly is decent email etiquette. A response after 72 hours is considered rude.

Email Etiquette Tip #6: Remember the Golden Rule

If after having several email conversations with a potential mate, you decide to end the communication, appropriate etiquette would dictate that you send off an email explaining the situation. You would expect the same consideration if you were in their position.

Thirty-Something Singles Online Dating

June 28, 2006

In the late 80′s Newsweek reported that thirty-something single women had at best, only a 20% chance of getting married. I can’t tell you how many of my single women friends got depressed over this prediction. Now, 20 years later Newsweek finally told singles and the world that the findings on thirty-something dating and marriage was inaccurate. Why? The older research was based in part on faulty conjectures on how many available thirty-something plus singles there are (50 million in the US alone) and how they meet each other.

Of course, anyone familar with online dating and singles demographics knew the Newsweek report was bogus. Yet, in all fairness Newsweek could not have possibly accounted for the rapid rise in online dating among singles over thirty because the mainstream Internet was not even around at the time of the original article.

Over Thirty Singles and Online Dating

To the surprise of many, while twenty-somethings make up the largest singles dating pool, more than half (54%) of all online dating occurs between singles who are over thirty years old. Since the online dating industry garnered over 500 million dollars in 2005, that means there’s a whole lot of dating going on between thirty-somethings, forty-somethings and fifty-somethings.

Not wanting to miss out on this booming niche market, many online dating services have have created separate dating sites catering to over thirty singles. The top-selling online dating services that Christian singles over 30 use are eHarmony Dating Service and  Christian Mingle because they have huge databases for over thirty daters.

Are you a Christian single with knowledge of other online dating sites for singles over the age of thirty? Feel free to help other singles by sharing your comments.

Good Christian Dating Relationship Signs

June 26, 2006

Christian dating relationship

What are some signs of a good Christian dating relationship? What qualities would you look for in the “right one” for you as a Christian single? Generally, the following list of signs should be present in your Christian dating partner if you are considering a lifelong commitment in marriage.

Good Christian Dating Relationships

  • Your dating interest (we assume he or she is a Christian) is growing more and more in love with Jesus. Just as important, he/she has not caused you to stumble sexually, but has also had a positive spiritual influence on you.

  • He or she has a good sense of humor. Why is this important? Life is full of valleys and tribulations, but a good sense of humor will help keep things in perspective. People who can see humor in their circumstances generally have a cheerful outlook on life, which is very important to a successful relationship. Proverbs 17:22 states “A merry heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.”

  • He or she respects your feelings, needs, interests and dreams. They are not “control freaks” or overly possessive, but give you the personal space to succeed by being your own person.

  • He or she is able to converse and be vulnerable with you. This means being able to be intimate and communicate on the heart level. They can honestly share true feelings, whether they be positive or negative.

  • Your guy or gal possesses good conflict resolution skills, and knows how to argue constructively.

  • Your dating partner has loving relationships with their family members and friends. Watch how they treat those closest to them, beacause this is how they will most likely begin treating you.

  • Your single friend is financially stable. This does not mean they need to be a millionaire, but they should be able to support themselves.

  • Your dating partner is “over” their past dating relationship. If they are constantly bringing up the “ex”, you can assume this is not the case.

  • They take care of themselves physically and emotionally.

  • They have a good relationship with your parents and friends. Note: If your parents and closest Christian friends feel something is wrong with the dating relationship, proceed with great caution.

Of course, the above is not an exhaustive list of good signs to look for in your Christian dating relationship partner. If you can think of any other positive dating relationship qualities, please consider helping other singles by sharing your views.
