7 Signs He’s Just Stringing You Along (And What Scripture Says About It)

You’ve been talking for months. The conversations feel deep. The chemistry is real. You’ve prayed about him, hoped about him, and maybe even started imagining a future with him. Yet something still feels off. You’re left wondering if you’re moving forward together or if you’re just being kept on the side.

Being “strung along” is one of the most painful experiences in Christian dating. It leaves you confused, exhausted, and questioning your own discernment. The good news is that God never designed relationships to keep you in limbo. His Word gives us clear wisdom for recognizing when someone’s actions do not match a heart that is ready for covenant love.

Here are seven common signs that a man may be stringing you along, along with the biblical truth that can help you see the situation clearly.

1. His Communication Is Inconsistent and Convenient

One of the earliest signs is an uneven pattern of contact. He texts or calls when it suits him—often late at night or when he’s bored—then disappears for days without explanation. When he reappears, he acts as if nothing happened.

Scripture values reliability. Proverbs 25:19 says, “Like a broken tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in a time of trouble.” A man who is truly interested in pursuing you will make consistent effort. Love does not leave you guessing about whether you’ll hear from him. If his communication only happens on his terms, he is not treating you as a priority. He is treating you as an option.

2. He Avoids Defining the Relationship

You’ve been exclusive in practice for weeks or months, yet every time the conversation turns toward “what are we?”, he deflects. He may say things like “Let’s just see where this goes” or “I don’t want to rush labels.” While patience is wise, perpetual ambiguity is not.

God is a God of clarity, not confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). A man who is walking in integrity will not keep you in the dark about his intentions. Ephesians 5:25 calls men to love sacrificially, the way Christ loved the church. That kind of love does not hide behind vague language. If he is unwilling to clarify where he stands after a reasonable amount of time, he is likely enjoying the benefits of your attention without the responsibility of commitment.

3. He Makes No Concrete Future Plans That Include You

He talks about next weekend with friends, a work trip, or even long-term goals, but you are rarely (or never) part of those plans. When you suggest something weeks ahead, he stays noncommittal. “We’ll see” becomes his favorite phrase.

Biblical love looks ahead. In Song of Solomon 2:10–13, the beloved invites his bride into a shared future with intentionality and joy. A man who is serious about you will begin to weave you into his vision of tomorrow. If every plan remains open-ended or excludes you, he is not building a life with you—he is simply keeping you available.

4. He Keeps You Separate From His Real Life

He has not introduced you to close friends, family, or his church community. When the subject comes up, he offers excuses: “They’re not ready,” “It’s complicated,” or “I like keeping things private.” While some discretion early on is understandable, prolonged secrecy is a red flag.

Jesus said that what is hidden will eventually be revealed (Luke 12:2). A man who is proud to pursue you will eventually want the important people in his life to know you. If he is ashamed or reluctant to bring you into his circle, he may be protecting other options or avoiding accountability. Real pursuit does not keep you in the shadows.

5. His Effort Is Hot and Cold

One week he is attentive, thoughtful, and present. The next week he is distant, distracted, or irritable. You find yourself constantly adjusting to his emotional temperature, walking on eggshells to keep the connection alive.

James 1:8 describes a double-minded man as unstable in all his ways. Consistent character is a mark of maturity. A man who is ready for a godly relationship does not subject the woman he claims to care about to emotional whiplash. Love is steady. It does not require you to earn his good mood or recover from his sudden withdrawal.

6. He Takes More Than He Gives

The relationship feels lopsided. You are the one initiating most conversations, planning most of the time together, and offering most of the emotional support. He receives your encouragement, prayers, and attention but rarely reciprocates with the same level of investment.

Philippians 2:4 instructs us to look not only to our own interests but also to the interests of others. A man who is stringing you along often enjoys the feeling of being pursued and cared for without carrying the weight of mutual investment. Healthy biblical relationships are marked by mutual giving, not one-sided emotional labor.

7. He Resists Spiritual Leadership and Accountability

When the conversation turns toward praying together, attending church as a couple, or seeking counsel from mature believers, he becomes uncomfortable or dismissive. He may claim he wants a “spiritual” relationship while avoiding any real spiritual covering or direction.

A man who intends to lead a household one day must first demonstrate the willingness to walk under authority and pursue God with you. Ephesians 5:23–25 paints a picture of a husband who leads by loving and sacrificing. If he will not take spiritual initiative now, it is unlikely he will suddenly develop that character after marriage. Stringing someone along often includes spiritual passivity dressed up as “taking it slow.”

What Should You Do If You See These Signs?

Seeing these patterns does not automatically mean the man is malicious. Sometimes he is simply immature, fearful, or unclear about his own heart. But your responsibility is not to fix him or wait indefinitely while your own peace erodes.

Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts, for everything we do flows from it. Guarding your heart means refusing to keep pouring emotional energy into a relationship that lacks clarity, consistency, and commitment. It means choosing to believe what his actions are telling you more than what his occasional kind words promise.

You are allowed to ask direct questions. You are allowed to set a reasonable timeline for clarity. And you are allowed to walk away with dignity if he continues to offer only partial presence.

God’s best for you is not a relationship that leaves you anxious and uncertain. His design for romantic love includes mutual pursuit, growing commitment, and the security that comes from two people choosing each other under His lordship. Anything less is not the fullness He intends.

If you recognize yourself in this article, take heart. The same God who sees every inconsistent text and every avoided conversation also sees your desire for a godly marriage. He is not withholding good things from you. Sometimes the most faithful step is to stop accepting breadcrumbs and start trusting Him with the whole loaf.

Keep your standards high. Keep your heart soft toward the Lord. And refuse to settle for a connection that requires you to shrink, wait endlessly, or silence your own God-given discernment. The right man will not string you along. He will walk with you in the light.
